In an Intrasquad game in 1914 Babe Ruth hit his first Professional Home Run while playing pitcher. In the 1921 season Ruth would hit his 139th Home Run of his career passing Hall of Famer Roger Conner becoming the All time Home Run leader. He held the all-time Home Run record all the way until 1974 when Henry Aaron passed him on the all-time list. Ruth still holds the all time record for most Total bases in a season, his 457 bases in a season is a 100 year old record which he set when he was 26 years old. Sammy Sosa of the Cubs is the closest one to get to Ruth's record within the past 20 years. Sosa had 425 Total bases in 2001, still 22 shy of Ruth's 100 year old record. Babe Ruth is credited for keeping the game of Baseball alive in the early 1920's after the Black Sox scandel of 1919 nearly ruined the game forever. Since his MLB debut in 1914 their has not been a player in Major League Baseball with the last name of Ruth.
